Mefenpyr-diethyl is a herbicide safener used in cereal crops such as wheat, barley, rye and triticale, where it is co-formulated with herbicides such as fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, iodosulfuron and mesosulfuron to protect the crop from herbicide injury. It has no herbicidal activity of its own; instead it enhances herbicide metabolism in the crop, for example by inducing glutathione S-transferases and cytochrome P450 enzymes.
