L-Penicillamine is a thiol-containing amino acid and the L-enantiomer of penicillamine. Unlike D-penicillamine, the enantiomer used clinically, L-Penicillamine is toxic because it antagonizes pyridoxine (vitamin B6), so it is not used therapeutically. It serves as a research compound, for example as the comparison enantiomer in stereochemical, pharmacological and toxicity studies of penicillamine, and as a vitamin B6 antagonist. It is also employed in research for its metal-binding and antioxidant properties. This chemical has a CAS number of 1113-41-3, molecular formula (CH₃)₂C(SH)CH(NH₂)CO₂H, and a molecular weight of 149.21 g/mol. Store it between 2–8°C, and handle with caution—it carries a Warning signal word for safety. Molekula supplies L-Penicillamine from research to bulk quantities with full documentation and ISO 9001:2015 traceability.
