VP1 Reagent is Voges-Proskauer reagent A, a solution of alpha-naphthol (1-naphthol, C10H8O) in ethanol (CH3CH2OH), with water (H2O) also listed as a component. It is a microbiological diagnostic reagent used together with VP2 (potassium hydroxide) in the Voges-Proskauer test to detect acetoin production by bacteria. The active component is alpha-naphthol, typically about 5% in ethanol, and the product has a signal word of Warning, indicating moderate hazard. It is stable at ambient storage conditions.
