Thiophene is a heterocyclic organic compound used as a building block in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and electronic materials. It also serves as a solvent, as a monomer for copolymers with maleic anhydride, and as an intermediate for thiophene-phenol-formaldehyde resins. It is a colorless, flammable liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor.
