Safranine O (C.I. 50240) is a cationic dye used in histology, microbiology, and staining applications for biological specimens. It is the standard counterstain for Gram-negative bacteria in Gram staining, and industrially it serves as an azine dye for colouring leather. It is also employed in dye-sensitized solar cells and as a fluorescent probe. Available with CAS number 477-73-6, molecular formula C20H19ClN4, and molecular weight 350.84 g/mol.
