Polyanetholesulfonic acid sodium salt (sodium polyanetholesulfonate, SPS) is a synthetic polymer widely used as an anticoagulant in blood culture bottles, where it prevents clotting of the blood sample. It also inhibits complement activity, phagocytosis and certain antibiotics, which supports the recovery of microorganisms from blood cultures.
