Molekoll 400 is a synthetic, highly branched copolymer of sucrose and epichlorohydrin, equivalent to Ficoll 400. It is used in density-gradient media for cell and organelle separation, as a macromolecular crowding agent, and as a component of Denhardt's solution and gel-loading buffers. This non-hazardous, high-molecular-weight polymer (CAS 26873-85-8) has a molecular formula of [C12H22O11·C3H5ClO]n with an approximate molecular weight of 400,000.
