Menadione is a synthetic vitamin K analog, also known as vitamin K3 (2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone), used primarily as a nutritional supplement and as a provitamin that is converted in vivo to vitamin K2 (menaquinone-4). As a provitamin K, it is converted to the vitamin K cofactor required for gamma-carboxylation of clotting factors, and is employed in animal feed and pharmaceutical formulations. Available in powder form with a purity of ≥98%, it has a CAS number of 58-27-5, molecular formula C11H8O2, and molecular weight of 172.18 g/mol.
