Hydrogen chloride (ca. 0.5M solution in methanol) is a corrosive acid widely used in organic synthesis, catalysis, and analytical chemistry for chlorination reactions and solvent applications. In synthesis it is used to prepare hydrochloride salts of drug substances, convert olefins into alkyl chlorides, and catalyse isomerization, polymerization and alkylation reactions.
