Benzopinacol is a thermal radical initiator used for the heat-activated curing of unsaturated polyester resins and for the polymerization of styrene and acrylates. Beyond polymer work, it also serves as an intermediate in organic synthesis. On heating, its central carbon–carbon bond breaks to generate the radicals that start polymerization. It is a stable, crystalline solid that facilitates efficient curing in formulations cured at elevated temperature.
