It is the non-halogenated precursor to the halogenated hydantoins BCDMH (bromochlorodimethylhydantoin), DBDMH (dibromodimethylhydantoin) and DCDMH (dichlorodimethylhydantoin), which are the biocides used in water treatment. It is also the starting material for DMDM hydantoin and for hydantoin-based epoxy resins. Beyond these derivatives, DMH is used in synthesizing water-soluble polymers and serves as an inert ingredient in pesticide formulations.
