Sodium hydrogen sulfate (sodium bisulfate)
Sodium hydrogen sulfate, commonly called sodium bisulfate (NaHSO4), is an acidic salt formed by partial neutralisation of sulfuric acid. It is supplied as a white crystalline solid, anhydrous or as the monohydrate, and dissolves in water to give a strongly acidic solution. It is used in pH adjustment, cleaning formulations, metal finishing and food applications, and as a dry, easier-to-handle alternative to liquid mineral acids.

What is sodium hydrogen sulfate?
Sodium hydrogen sulfate (NaHSO4) is the acid salt of sulfuric acid in which one of the two acidic protons has been replaced by sodium. The anhydrous form (CAS 7681-38-1) and the monohydrate (CAS 10034-88-5) are the grades most often traded. In water, the hydrogen sulfate ion releases protons, so solutions are strongly acidic. It can be produced by reacting sodium chloride with sulfuric acid, a route that also yields hydrogen chloride.

Where is it used?
Because it is a solid acid, sodium hydrogen sulfate is often chosen when liquid acids would be awkward to store, dose or transport. Typical applications include:
- lowering pH and alkalinity in swimming pool and spa water;
- acidic cleaning products, such as toilet and descaling cleaners;
- metal finishing and pickling;
- food uses, where sodium hydrogen sulfate is authorised in the EU and UK as an additive within E 514 (sodium sulfates), subject to the applicable specifications;
- laboratory pH adjustment and use as a mild acidic reagent.
What should buyers and regulatory teams check?
Confirm whether the anhydrous or monohydrate form is required, as the assay and molar mass differ. Request a CoA covering assay, insoluble matter and heavy metals, and a current SDS. Under GHS/CLP, sodium hydrogen sulfate is classified as causing serious eye damage, so suitable eye protection is needed when handling it. For food or pharmaceutical use, confirm the grade meets the relevant specification (for example, FCC or EU food additive purity criteria). Check REACH registration status for supply into the EU and UK, and TSCA inventory listing for the US.
Related concepts
Sodium hydrogen sulfate is closely related to sulfuric acid, sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and other acid salts such as potassium hydrogen sulfate. It is often compared with other pH adjusters, including hydrochloric acid and citric acid, and should not be confused with sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3), a reducing agent.
