Zinc nitrate

Zinc nitrate is an inorganic zinc salt with the formula Zn(NO3)2, most commonly supplied as the hexahydrate, Zn(NO3)2·6H2O. It forms colourless, deliquescent crystals that are highly soluble in water. As an oxidising agent and a readily soluble zinc source, it is widely used in laboratories and industry as a precursor for zinc oxide materials, metal–organic frameworks and catalysts.

View product details

Zinc nitrate is the zinc(II) salt of nitric acid. The anhydrous form (CAS 7779-88-6) is less common in trade than the hexahydrate (CAS 10196-18-6), which is the form usually listed in supplier catalogues. The hexahydrate melts at a low temperature, around 36 °C, and absorbs moisture from the air, so it should be stored in tightly closed containers.

What is zinc nitrate used for?

In research and materials science, zinc nitrate is a standard zinc precursor. It is used in the hydrothermal and sol–gel synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures and thin films, and in the preparation of metal–organic frameworks such as ZIF-8 and MOF-5. Industrial uses include catalyst preparation, use as a mordant in dyeing, and use as a coagulant for latex.

What hazards should buyers and users be aware of?

As a nitrate, zinc nitrate is classified under GHS as an oxidising solid that may intensify fire, and it should be kept away from combustible materials and reducing agents. It is harmful if swallowed, irritating to skin and can cause serious eye irritation or damage. It is also classified as very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects, so disposal must follow local regulations. Exact hazard statements vary by supplier and grade, so always consult the current SDS.

How is zinc nitrate specified when ordering?

Orders should state the hydrate form, CAS number, purity and grade (for example, reagent or analytical grade). A CoA typically reports assay and trace impurities such as heavy metals, iron, chloride and sulfate. Regulatory status, including REACH registration and TSCA listing, should be confirmed with the supplier for the intended market.

Related concepts

Zinc nitrate is closely related to other soluble zinc salts such as zinc sulfate, zinc chloride and zinc acetate, which are often used as alternative zinc sources. It also connects to topics including oxidising agents, hydrates and deliquescence, zinc oxide nanomaterials and metal–organic framework synthesis.
