Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) is a phthalate ester commonly used as a plasticizer to increase flexibility in plastics, as a solvent in cellulosics, and in personal care products like perfumes and nail polishes. It also serves as a fixative in fragrances and an insect repellent. This clear, colorless liquid has a mild odor and is non-hazardous under normal conditions. With a CAS number of 131-11-3, dimethyl phthalate is non-flammable with a boiling point of 282–284°C and a density of 1.19 g/cm³. It is soluble in alcohol and ether but insoluble in water.
